One large hard-boiled egg contains approximately 78 calories, based on an edible weight of 50 grams without the shell. Two eggs of that size provide about 155 calories and approximately 12.6 grams of protein.
Eggs vary in size, so these numbers are estimates rather than fixed values for every egg. If you want a more accurate calculation, weigh the eggs after removing the shells and use the value for cooked egg per 100 grams.
Calories in boiled eggs by portion
The following estimates use the USDA reference for a whole hard-boiled egg, including both the white and the yolk, with no added ingredients.
| Portion | Edible weight without shell | Approximate calories |
|---|---|---|
| One small portion | 40 g | 62 |
| One large egg | 50 g | 78 |
| Two large eggs | 100 g | 155 |
| Three large eggs | 150 g | 233 |
| Four large eggs | 200 g | 310 |
These figures assume that each large egg provides 50 grams of edible food. If your eggs are smaller or larger, the total will change accordingly.
For example, if two peeled boiled eggs together weigh 90 grams, the calculation is:
90 g × 155 calories ÷ 100 g = approximately 140 calories
That figure applies to the eggs alone. Bread, mayonnaise, butter or other foods eaten with them contribute additional calories.
Boiled egg nutrition facts per 100 grams
According to the USDA reference, 100 grams of whole hard-boiled egg provide approximately:
| Nutrient | Amount per 100 g |
|---|---|
| Calories | 155 kcal |
| Protein | 12.6 g |
| Fat | 10.6 g |
| Carbohydrates | 1.1 g |
| Fiber | 0 g |
A single large egg weighing 50 grams without its shell provides around 6.3 grams of protein and 5.3 grams of fat.
Eggs also contain nutrients such as vitamin B12 and choline. Like any individual food, however, they don’t have to provide everything a meal contains. Combining them with other foods can make the meal more varied and satisfying.
How much protein is in a boiled egg?
A large hard-boiled egg contains approximately 6 grams of protein. Two large eggs provide around 12–13 grams.
If you enjoy eggs for breakfast, you can combine them with other protein-containing foods according to your preferences. For example, two boiled eggs alongside yogurt or cottage cheese will provide more protein than the eggs alone.
Bread, fruit and vegetables can also contribute variety to the meal. The best combination depends on your appetite, preferences and what works for the rest of your day.
Do boiled eggs have fewer calories than fried eggs?
A plain boiled egg does not require cooking oil or butter. A fried egg can contain more calories if fat is added during preparation.
For example:
- One large boiled egg: approximately 78 calories.
- One large egg plus one teaspoon of oil: approximately 118 calories, if the entire teaspoon of oil is eaten.
The amount of oil that ends up in the portion can vary. Some may remain in the pan, while other recipes use more than one teaspoon. If you prepare several eggs together, consider how much of the cooking fat is likely to be in your serving.
Boiling is a convenient way to avoid added cooking fat, but frying an egg does not automatically make it unsuitable for weight loss. The useful question is how the preparation and portion fit into your overall eating pattern.
What about scrambled eggs and omelets?
The calories in scrambled eggs or an omelet depend on the full recipe.
Two large eggs provide approximately 155 calories before additions. If you also use oil, butter, milk, cheese or other ingredients, each contributes to the total.
For a homemade omelet, a practical approach is to record the ingredients separately. If you make enough for two people, calculate the total for the recipe and estimate how much of it you ate.
Restaurant portions can be more difficult to assess because you may not know how much cooking fat or cheese was used. In that situation, a reasonable estimate is more useful than assuming the meal is identical to two plain boiled eggs.
Do eggs gain calories when boiled?
Boiling does not create calories in the egg. However, nutrition databases may show different calorie values per 100 grams for raw and cooked eggs because the entries describe different samples and amounts of water.
The practical solution is to match the food entry to what you weighed:
- If you weigh the edible raw egg, use a raw-egg entry.
- If you weigh a peeled hard-boiled egg, use a hard-boiled-egg entry.
- Record any added ingredients separately.
This is similar to the distinction between raw and cooked weights discussed in How Many Calories in a Potato?
Can you eat boiled eggs while losing weight?
Yes. Boiled eggs can fit into both a weight-loss plan and a weight-maintenance routine.
They are convenient, provide protein and can be combined with many other foods. You might enjoy them with toast and tomatoes at breakfast, add them to a salad at lunch or have one as part of a snack.
Whether a particular meal supports your goals depends on the overall portion, the other ingredients and your eating habits over time. There is no reason to treat eggs as a food you must eat—or as a food you must avoid—simply because you are managing your weight.
For someone who likes eggs, keeping a few boiled eggs available can make a planned meal easier when time is limited. For someone who dislikes them, plenty of other foods can provide protein.
Track egg calories with CaloPop
If you use CaloPop – Free Calorie Tracker, you can record the portion you eat and take the rest of your meal into account.
For a straightforward estimate, use approximately 78 calories per large hard-boiled egg. If the eggs are noticeably different in size, weighing them without their shells can give you a closer estimate.
Tracking works best as a source of information, not as a judgment about whether you ate “perfectly.” An estimate does not have to be exact to help you understand your habits and make decisions that support your goals.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories are in one boiled egg?
A large hard-boiled egg weighing approximately 50 grams without its shell contains about 78 calories.
How many calories are in two boiled eggs?
Two large hard-boiled eggs weighing 100 grams in total without their shells contain approximately 155 calories.
How much protein is in two boiled eggs?
Two large hard-boiled eggs provide approximately 12.6 grams of protein.
Should I weigh a boiled egg with or without the shell?
Weigh it without the shell. The USDA calorie values refer to the edible portion.
Are boiled eggs good for weight loss?
Boiled eggs can be a useful part of a weight-loss plan if you enjoy them. They provide protein and don’t require added cooking fat, but no single food guarantees weight loss. Your overall eating pattern matters.
Do the calories in an egg depend on its size?
Yes. A larger edible portion generally contains more calories. The 78-calorie estimate assumes a peeled egg weighing approximately 50 grams.
